What is small business bookkeeping?

Small business bookkeeping, done properly

For most small businesses, bookkeeping is the job that never quite gets done — receipts pile up, the bank goes un-reconciled, and the picture only becomes clear (often painfully) at year-end.

We take it off your plate entirely. Your bank transactions are reconciled, your sales invoices and supplier bills recorded, and your records kept MTD-ready on cloud software — so your numbers are always current and your accountant isn’t starting from a shoebox.

Better still, current books mean a live view of the things that actually keep a small business afloat: your cash flow, your profit and loss, and exactly what you’re owed and what you owe (your accounts receivable and payable).

Sound familiar?

The headaches we take off your plate

If any of these are eating your time or worrying you, they’re exactly what we take off your plate.

  • Receipts and invoices piling up unrecorded
  • A bank account that never quite reconciles
  • No real-time view of what you’re owed and what you owe
  • Scrambling for figures at year-end
  • Making Tax Digital record-keeping rules
  • Spending evenings on admin instead of the business

FAQ

Small business bookkeeping — your questions answered

How much does bookkeeping cost for a small business?
It depends on your transaction volume and whether you’re VAT registered, which is why we agree a fixed monthly fee up front after a quick quote. For most small businesses it’s a modest, predictable amount — and it usually saves more than it costs by avoiding year-end clean-up fees and missed claims.
Do I need a bookkeeper and an accountant?
They’re different jobs — bookkeeping keeps your day-to-day records current, while year-end accounts and tax sit on top. We do both under one roof, so your books feed straight into your accounts with no gap and no duplication.
Which software do you use?
We’re certified on Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent and will recommend the best fit for your business, then set it up with bank feeds and receipt capture so most of the data flows in automatically.
What is Making Tax Digital and does it affect me?
MTD requires digital record-keeping and software-filed returns — already in force for VAT and coming for Income Tax. We keep your records to MTD standards now, so you’re compliant well before any deadline.
Can you clear a backlog of bookkeeping?
Yes. We regularly take on businesses that are months (or years) behind, bring everything up to date, then keep it current going forward.
