A straightforward percentage calculator. It works on the price you enter and doesn’t add or remove VAT — use our VAT calculator for that.

Whether you’re pricing a sale, checking a deal or setting a markdown, this works both ways: take a percentage off a price to see the final figure and your saving, or enter the original and sale price to find the exact discount percentage.

Discounting eats margin fast

A discount comes straight off your profit, not your cost — so a small markdown can wipe out a big slice of margin. On a product with a 40% gross margin, a 20% discount halves your profit. Before you run a sale, it’s worth checking what’s left with the margin calculator.

Stacked discounts don’t add up

“20% off, then an extra 10%” feels like 30% — but the second cut comes off the already-reduced price, so it’s really 28% off. The more discounts you stack, the wider the gap. Always work out the final price, not the headline percentages.

FAQ

Discount calculator — your questions answered

How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it from the original price. For example, 20% off £50 is £50 × 0.20 = £10 saved, so you pay £40. Enter your figures above and it’s done for you.
How do I work out what percentage discount I got?
Subtract the sale price from the original price to get the saving, divide that by the original price and multiply by 100. A £50 item reduced to £35 is a £15 saving, and £15 ÷ £50 = 30% off. Switch the calculator to “Find the discount %” above.
How do two discounts stack — is 20% then 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. Applying 20% then a further 10% gives 28% off, not 30%, because the second discount comes off the already-reduced price. Successive discounts always total less than adding the percentages together.
Does the discount come off before or after VAT?
On a normal retail price the figure already includes VAT, so the discount comes off the gross price and the VAT reduces with it. If you’re a business working in net prices, apply the discount first and add VAT afterwards. Our VAT calculator handles the VAT step.
